Private James Donaghy

Son of Mr Patrick Donaghy, 44, Walker's Place, Londonderry.
On Saturday, January 22, 1916, the 'London Gazette' contained the following: 'His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to 8883 Private J. Donaghy, 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (attached 34th Divisional Signal Company Royal Engineers), for conspicuous gallantry at Kut-el-Amara (Mesopotamia) on 28th September, 1915. He delivered several messages under heavy shell fire and rifle fire, and was constantly engaged in repairing telephone wires under fire.'
Private Donaghy had been serving with the Anglo Indian force in Mesopotamia and took part in an advance on Baghdad and a subsequent retreat to Kut-el-Amara.
